Super intelligence: an existential threat or misunderstood notion

Humans have nonpareil powers of imagination, to elaborate in our history, we had famous Plato’s imagined ideal forms — he didn’t fooled us, rather there are geometric forms that fully embody the experience of ideal forms.

Superintelligence is coming

The issue — I would like to stress is that we as humans have an uncanny ability of making up exaggerated notions of dichotomies — nirvana and purgatory. I am not suggesting that it always spurious story making rather these idealistic notions at the edges, in reality represent a fantasy character to human consciousness and this conspicuous character dawdles through our cognitive history. These cognitive dichotomies are useful, benevolent and malevolent all at the same time, and similar is the stamp of empiricist with any activity involving human.

Unfortunately, reality is fraught with competing entities; to elaborate — it has slew of forces, entities and existences making compromises in scarcity of time and space, all tensions work with potentials to sustain an existence and space of notions is no different. All of them interact, eclipse each other or make allowance to make a soup of reality, the core things is to keep interaction and potential in state of equilibrium.

To comeback to our contention concerning super-intelligence, how the notion of consciousness and intelligence is assumed by ignoring the interaction time, it places a natural limit on brewing of experience. A super-intelligence can be faster in determined and completely known reality, while experience ventured into unknown aka revelation of reality is painstakingly slow and may be impossible to expedite in developing experience and only if there is a determined reality to the like of chess moves on the board then such an expedited reality can result in determining more reality or elaborate atleast already traversed one. Experience like organic structures take its time to refine expression and growth — Imagine a speed travel between two cities, as the travel is expedited the experience is not the same as traveler making stops at all cities and towns between those two destinations.

Another famous argument is many machines gathering experiences individually to create a common enhanced and integrated super intelligence. Theoretically and ostentatiously seems plausible approach to realize a many agents model and if applied, our contention is that it might be a little faster with given that machines can integrate the experience in a unified representation. An anecdotal scrutiny is possible by present state of cognitive leaps or lack of it, with constellation of many agents, at present there are more than 6 billion people living on this blue dot and the pace of innovation and technological development is unsurprising to our imagination. If look closer— It is a time in human history where we have most number of universities, researchers and R&D based private enterprises, while the experience and consciousness growth is little faster than previous epochs and no singularity or exponential growth is on the horizon. While production rate has exponentially increased in manufacturing again helped by the known method of quick repetitions, this is where present day machine excel.

In this wisdom stirring nugget, my principle suggestion is on the primal nature of intelligence and consciousness, both are emergent and possible only by the interactions of participating entities, and it is not always possible to expedite all participating entities. Rather time and space has to evolve at a rate to form a human like experience or in other words a meaningful experience take place only under some conditions in this peculiar reality. For simplified explanation — we can take analogy from everyday experience like playing a video game, watching a movie or listening to music, all of these events had to happened at a particular speed only then it makes game, movie and sound comprehensible and enjoyable, otherwise it not a worth any experience rather actually could be outright annoying. Machines can go faster but in known reality, while the cornerstone event of experience arrive in pace with trivial living experience and no amount of quickness is attainable, without detrimental compromises on other vagaries of existences and experiences.

All of above arguments compel readers to repudiate the existential falsehood sold by the prophets of doom in regards to fictional super-intelligence, nevertheless, any human invention under human misuse certainly always has a potential apocalyptic nature to it.
